Week 22A – Silence

Complete Silence – does it really exist anymore?
I had the assignment of choosing one complete 24 hour period or longer to be completely silent.
This meant – unplugging.  No talking to anyone, no phone, no internet, no texting, just silence.

It can be done – not talking can be very simple when you are in a house all alone with just a cat.
Inclement March weather of an unexpected snowstorm makes for interesting entertainment.

Sleet consistently pecking at the windows and siding of the house.
The hum of the furnace fan.
The buzz of the refrigerator motor.
The clank of the vent of the stove exhaust fan being buffetted by the wind.
The whooshing of the wind as it gusts unseen – except for the snow you can see blowing and trees moving.
The cat sneezes.
The copper and wood windchimes on the back porch – how pretty.
Snap, pat and whirr of the gas fireplace running.
Wow – there goes a snow plow down the street.
And a White pickup truck driving like he’s on dry pavement.
Is that the flapping blades of a helicopter I hear?
And now an Ambulance Siren as well.
The crinkle of the basket as the cat climbs in for a nap.

On an even more personal note, I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and as I sit here, I notice the cyclical pattern of the ringing as it coincides with my heartbeat and bloodflow.
I notice my breathing, the sound as I inhale and exhale through my nose.
My right knee makes a popping noise as I stand to take a stretch and a little walk around the house.
Muffled Sock footsteps and the quick soft steps of the cat as he follows me.

When I return to my prior location – the comfy couch by the fireplace I have noticed that the sleet has now turned to the still soft silence of fluffy snowflakes falling – how different the weather sounds now.

So what you say?

Have you ever taken a break from the daily grind to just “BE STILL AND KNOW”?  Then, BE Still, then BE, KNOW!

After all the noise around me I have taken for granted have become oblivious and become part of the norm, I find myself in silence.
Alone, All Alone, just me, all me, by myself.

Scary? Fear? No, not really, just awkward.  Honestly, I find myself wanting to get up and do something, but I commit to stay sitting still and listen and BE.

I am amazed at all the chatter that has been going through my head trying to derail my effort for no thoughts and just peaceful silence.

Success – I am here, I am in Silence, I am me.   Just me, in this very moment, right where I am supposed to be

I challenge you my friends to schedule some time to experience this exercise, You will be so blessed and refreshed by it!

Very nice observations and insights on silence. And that ringing in your ears, I loved the way you were just with it, observing, neither positive nor negative. On tinnitus, there is a cause, therefore very often a solution.
